Kalmar secures order for STS crane refurbishment in Hong Kong

2013 Press

CARGOTEC CORPORATION, PRESS RELEASE, 11 JUNE 2013 AT 9 A.M. (EEST)

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has won an order to retrofit and upgrade two Hong Kong-based NDC ship-to-shore (STS) crane units for leading global waste management firm, SITA Waste Services Ltd. The order has been booked into Cargotec's 2013 second quarter order intake.

The project, valued at over EUR 2 million, will be undertaken by Kalmar's specialist Crane Services team and it takes place at SITA's West Kowloon transfer station where the STS cranes are used for solid waste container handling. The complex refurbishment will commence in December 2013 - with delivery of all major components and materials - and is set for completion by the end of March 2014.

Both STS cranes have been in operation for 15 years and their spare parts availability is limited. Refurbishment of the models will include the replacement of the electrical control system (PLC and AC Drives), hoisting motors, wire rope drum, hoisting frame and head block. The cranes will also require new gantry motors, equalizer beams and boogies along with all cables and festoons.  The cranes will also be repainted. These major updates will improve efficiency and productivity while prolonging the lifespan of the cranes.

SITA Project Engineering Manager at West Kowloon Transfer Station, Mr Sunny Kwong, said: "With original spare parts hard to come by and the cranes approaching their 16th year of service, we needed to take action..  As a crane manufacturer with an excellent reputation and strong service support on offer, Kalmar became the logical choice for this massive investment. This was reinforced by excellent references from its worldwide customer base."

"We feel privileged to be chosen by SITA for this project, which is an important breakthrough for us in Hong Kong. Despite the project complexity, we are very confident in accomplishing it, thanks to the experience and support provided by the Kalmar Cranes Services Competence Center in Malaysia and in the Netherland", remarked by Thomas Wong, Vice President, Service Business, Kalmar APAC.
